Movie Reviews

Reviews of the latest cinematic releases.

I've recently seen the all new, break through movie Avatar and I loved it! I highly recommend it, with its thrilling storyline and unique characters the movie has got you sitting on the edge of your seat! I really want to go and see it again and I would definately buy a DVD of it though the experince won't be the same as the big screen. It is a bit long but the greatness of the movie overcomes the time.

Jake Sully is the twin-brother of a scientist and therefore has the same DNA print as him. As a result of his brother's death, Jake chooses to go to Pandora to help a huge Corporation to conquer and mine this world by learning the native's ways.

It was Thursday night at five past midnight and I was in a packed cinema with 400 others sitting in eager anticipation of watching the first UK screening (bar the premiere) of Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen. I must confess that attending midnight showings of movies is not a habit for me (I think Spiderman is the only other one I've gone to see), but such is my love of the first Transformers movie (and that I had a day off on the Friday) that a friend and I couldn't resist the allure and excitement of seeing Transformers 2 at a crazy time of night!

I thought the original X-Men trilogy was great (and definitely recommend watching them); however, the films do leave a lot of unanswered questions about the characters, especially one of the most loved characters Wolverine. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is the first of a new series of movies exploring the back-stories of characters from the X-Men universe and it sets out to answer these questions. With a chance of finding out what really happened to Wolverine, I was not going to miss this film.

Ever wished you could go back to being 17 again? If I wasn’t already 17, I think I would. It’s exactly what Mike O’Donnell wishes. At 17 he was in line for an amazing scholarship, had a wonderful girlfriend and was popular at school. Now Mike finds himself living with his nerd best friend instead of his wife, his career is stationary and his kids ignore him. Luckily for Mike a chance meeting with an old janitor magically transforms him back into his 17 year old self.

The Oscars this year (and almost every other movie awards) were taken over by this relatively low budget British film. It won 8 Oscars and 77 other awards. Even months after it was originally released it was still showing in my local cinema. With so many awards I guessed it must be good but I decided to find out if it really was the “feel good film of the decade”.

Slumdog Millionaire is about Jamal Malik, an Indian boy living in Mumbai. He is a contestant on the Indian version of the show “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” Jamal is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees when he is suspected of cheating. The police interrogate Jamal to find out how a boy from the slums could know all the answers. Each question holds a story behind it and in the story behind the answers we see Jamal grow up.

Inkheart is based on the best selling book by Cornelia Funke. It is the story of a young girl called Meggie who finds out that her father is a “Silvertongue”: a person who can bring the written word to life by reading it aloud. When Meggie was just a small child, her father Mo, had accidentally “read” Meggie’s mother into a book called Inkheart bringing the villains out of the book in her place. It's now nine years later and the book’s villains are back.

The plot of Inkheart is ingenious and fast-paced. The film makers have adapted it excellently from the book. Unlike many adaptations, Inkheart has stuck closely to the original storyline and all the characters have been well cast and acted. My imagination did not leave the cinema disappointed. I was also impressed by the European feel to the film, which is not surprising since the author is German. It is nice every once in a while to see something that is not overwhelmingly American.

Well, Bond 22 is finally here. It’s one of those films you feel you just have to go and see. I mean, it’s James Bond after all. So I found myself at the cinema and came out with this opinion.

To describe Quantum of Solace in a few words, it would be “a high speed chase around the world”. The film kicks off with a car chase, quickly followed by a rooftop chase and a motorboat chase. Then the audience is given a break while Bond goes to a party in Austria and Italy. After that there’s the plane chase (Bond’s plane, of course, falling apart mid-air) before we reach the Bolivian desert for the finale. If you love action, this is the film for you.

Jerry Shaw returns home from his twin brother’s funeral to find his room overflowing with the latest military hardware, material for explosives and a set of alternate identities. His mobile rings and a female voice informs him that he has 30 seconds before the FBI arrives… Framed as a terrorist, Jerry escapes FBI custody with the help of this mystery caller and is coerced, along with a single mum, into outworking a dangerous mission. At every step of the way the caller controls and tracks their actions using every day technology.

Once that first phone call is made Eagle Eye punches the accelerator and doesn’t let up until the closing credits. This is a fast paced “techno thriller” where technology is as much a leading character as Jerry or single mum Rachel. Constant cuts to a map of America made up of networked CCTV images remind us of technology’s key role in the story.

I thought I'd missed seeing The Clone Wars at the cinema, but the movie got a half-term reprieve! So like any boy (or girl) influenced by an extreme diet of Star Wars, Jedis and lightsabers when growing up, I just had to go and see this movie.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars is effectively Episode 2.5 within the grand scheme of the Star Wars universe attempting to bridge the gap between the second and third movies of the new or prequel trilogy. Many, admittedly hardcore fans, were dissapointed when Episode 3: The Revenge of the Sith, completely missed out the infamous Clone Wars and so this animated movie seeks to remedy this.
