What we all knew was true in our spirits has finally been confirmed by judges in the UKs Court of Appeal: Pringles are potato crisps!
Now, for some of you there was probably never any doubt - they feel like crisps, crunch like crisps and taste like crisps - but back in July 2008 a High Court Judge ruled that Pringles were not potatoey-enough to be called crisps and therefore Pringles manufacturers (Proctor & Gamble) were not liable to pay VAT.
However, after a year of not being a crisp, Pringles are now officially crisps once more, as three judges in the Court of Appeal last Wednesday overturned the High Court's (somewhat dubious) decision. The judges said that Pringles (at 42 per cent potato) contain "more than enough potato content" to be considered a crisp.
What's the big deal you may ask? Well, Proctor & Gamble have to now continue paying £20 million VAT a year on their Pringles product... and you get to call Pringles crisps once more (if you ever stopped...).
Just so you're clear:
Crisps: Walkers, Hula Hoops, Wotsits, Pringles.
Not Crisps: Doritos, Twiglets, tortilla chips, Mini Cheddars and Wheat Crunchies.
