ignite’s Privacy Policy

1. Acceptance of our Privacy Policy

Scripture Union Scotland takes your privacy very seriously and is committed to providing a safe and secure online environment for secondary-aged teenagers to socialise online through our website, www.suignite.org.uk.

This notice describes our privacy policy. By using suignite.org.uk you are accepting the practices described in this Privacy Policy.

In the following document “User” refers to public users of ignite, while “Member” refers to registered members of suignite.org.uk.

2. Information we collect

The types of information we gather include:

2.1. Information you give us

We collect personal information such as names, gender and date of birth, home address, email address, school year and school name in order to generate a Member activation keycode.  A Member’s unique activation keycode is sent to their home postal address or email address.

A valid email address is required when the Member logs in for the first time.

We receive and store all information entered on any of our online forms.  We use the information that Users or Members provide in this way for the purpose of responding to their requests.

2.2 Automatic collection of information

In order to provide the highest quality experience for all users, SU Scotland tracks the activity of all users accessing our site.  This information includes IP addresses of users, page views, unique visitors and repeat visitors.  We also collect information on the type of browser users use for statistical purposes.  None of this data is correlated in any way with any personally identifiable information.

We also use cookies, which are stored on a Member’s computer to enhance their experience.  This cookie tracks a Member’s preferences, whether they are logged in, and some of their activities while on our site.  Members may choose to reject these cookies, but if they do, they may be unable to take advantage of all the ignite features and services.  Refer to your browser’s help information to learn how to disable cookies.

All Member’s private messages and instant messages are also automatically saved into a secure database.  This is only accessed in the event of an investigation into cases including, but not exclusively of, bullying, abuse and allegations of grooming.

3. Security of the information we collect

Information we collect is stored in a secure data facility and is only available to authorised personnel on a need-to-know basis.

We take all reasonable precautions to secure and protect the information we collect.  All personal information is password protected.  However, no information collected over the internet can be guaranteed to be completely secure.  If we become aware of a security breach that may affect your personal information, we will notify Users via the email addresses Users provide.

4. Information we share

Scripture Union does not rent, sell or share User’s personal information with any third party companies.  There are two exceptions to this statement:

(a)   Member’s personal information may need to be shared when Scripture Union Scotland employs a company for the technical development of suignite.org.uk.  In this case the company will be asked to sign a confidentiality agreement.

(b)   We may also disclose information in special cases when we have reason to believe that disclosing this information is:

·         reasonably necessary in order to comply with the law;

·         to enforce or apply our Terms and Conditions;

·         to protect our rights and those of our Users.

ignite is a social networking website.  As such, personal information may be read by others if it’s posted in, for example, a blog entry, a message, a comment, a forum or a photo album.  We strongly advise against entering personal information in any public, semi-public or private online area.  From time to time and in order to make our Members aware of the risk involved with posting personal information online we will post articles on ignite about how to stay safe online.

5. Protecting our Members privacy

In order to protect our Members privacy we have chosen to setup a private, invite-only, social network that is not accessible to public Users or open to public Users to register as Members.

Information displayed automatically within a Member’s personal profile and in ignite’s community area is strictly limited to their real name, gender and school year.  No other information, including their email address and postal address, is visible to other Members, except at the Member’s own choosing.  A Member is also known by their real name whenever they access or post content to the site.

A Member is unable to edit their name within their profile.  We have put this information into a read-only field to help prevent people altering their identity or impersonating someone they are not.  A Member is known by their real name throughout the site.  If a mistake has been made within this read-only information, please contact support(at)suignite(dot)org(dot)uk so we can rectify the error.

All Adult Members of ignite are SU Scotland employees or volunteers, all of whom have gone through an application process with references and have also undergone an enhanced CRBS disclosure (a police check for volunteers in the voluntary sector working with children, young people and vulnerable adults at risk).  Every Adult Member will receive ongoing monitoring and will be required to fill in an annual Volunteer Update form, which includes supplying a reference, in order to remain a member of ignite.  All Adult Members are clearly identified within their profiles by the labels “SU Staff” or “SU Volunteer” within the ‘School Year’ field.

We believe that all of these steps are appropriate to help keep ignite a secure and safe online environment in which teenagers can socialise in.  We believe they do not contravene a Member’s privacy.

6. Links to external sites

This privacy policy only covers content found on suignite.org.uk and does not extend to other sites accessible through links posted on to suignite.org.uk.  These other sites will have separate privacy and data collection practices.  We do not have responsibility or liability for these independent policies.
