We believe this because this is what Jesus taught and we unpack two examples for you below of Jesus' teaching.
(1) No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:6)
One of the best ways to understand Jesus' teaching on this issue is through his use of the word ‘Father.' Jesus was God's only son and he called God Father. Only Jesus knows exactly who his Father is and what he is really like, for no one else has seen God except Jesus. Jesus, therefore, is the only one who can introduce us to him. Jesus signposts us to God in a way that says, "God is like me."
(2) In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. (John 14:2)
This is a lurve thing! In 1st Century Israel when a woman accepted an offer of marriage the man would say to her, "I am going to prepare a room for us in my father's house. When it is ready I will come back and take you to be with me there." And away the man would go and build his marital home as an extension to his father's house (this would often take many months and I'm glad our culture's different now!).
Sound familiar to what Jesus tells his closest friends in the verse above from John 14:2? Jesus describes heaven using lines from a groom's speech that people would have all heard before...
Jesus is the only one who has the authority to build rooms for us in his father's house as he is God's only son. He is therefore the only way to God and eternity in his house.
